在西藏雨崩村向兒童教授英語 (二零零六年四月)

Join us on a hiking and English teaching expedition to the Yubong Village, on the Meili Snow Mountain range, which borders Yunnan Province and Tibet. Spectacular treks, the opportunity to teach English to Tibetan children, amazing views of the Mekong and Yangtze rivers, and the chance to savour delicious local mushrooms, Yak meat, and Yak-butter tea!

Meili Mountain is famous for its main peak, Kagebo Peak (Kawagarpo), which, at an elevation of 6,740 metres above sea level, is the tallest in Yunnan Province. Every year, thousands of pilgrims come here to pay homage to the mountain. Legend has it that the mountain is the incarnation of a Tibetan God who helped local people drive away evil. We will follow the pilgrims' route through Yubong village to a breathtaking sacred waterfall.

Yubong village is home to around 300 Tibetan people. Eight children attend the local primary school, where facilities are minimal. There is no education available for the teenagers in the village, and we were unable to find anybody in the village who spoke any English, although some of the teenage horse guides could shout 'David Beckham' or 'Michael Jordan'! Our party comprises around ten volunteer English teachers, who will all teach beginner English to the children, teenagers and adults in the village.
